The 2009 Sportster 883 Custom continues to enjoy the warm reception showered on it by new and experienced Harley-Davidson riders alike. While it shares much in common with the other members of the Sportster family, it has a unique set of features that sets it apart.

The Custom version of the Sportster 883 differs from its cousin, the '09 Sportster 883 Low, in a number of ways, most of which revolve around how the chassis is configured. While the Low version of the motorcycle takes a short, compact stance, the Sportster 883 Custom is more stretched out. It’s almost as if it is hinting that it comes from a long line of custom choppers ridden by renegade bikers from the days of yore.

Still present is the 883cc engine. While it is the smaller of the two Sportster power plants, it has all the torque that it needs to stay nimble on its feet. Also, the six speed transmission and Electronic Fuel Injection system combine to give it better performance and fuel consumption than ever before.

The laced stainless steel wheels (21” up front), new suspension, lighter rear wheel, larger 4.5-gallon fuel tank, two-up seat, and pullback handlebar riser, all serve to differentiate between the 883 Custom and the Low. The engine is power-coated in silver while the 4.5 gallons gas tank is built around the frame rather than on it and this allows for the low-rise handlebar to be mounted on the Custom and so offer the rider a much more chopperesque riding position. Other minor styling queues which help identify this Harley-Davidson motorcycle from its brethren include a chrome shorty exhaust, full rear fender, forward-mounted footpegs, and a bullet headlamp.

Paint schemes for this bike are wide and varied with nine different hues rolling off the line at the Harley-Davidson production plant. Heritage colors include: Vivid Black, Pewter Pearl, and Two-Tone White Gold Pearl/Pewter Pearl. There are three new color sets which are Pewter Pearl/Flame Blue Pearl, Red Hot Sunglo, and Two-Tone Red Hot Sunglo/Smokey Gold. Finally, there are three custom colors which have limited availability, these include: Two-Tone Black Ice/Blue Ice, Two-Tone Light Candy Root Beer/Dark Candy Root Beer , and Two-Tone Big Purple Flake/Brilliant Silver.
