Harley-Davidson Sportster Reviews

Since its introduction in 1957 the Harley-Davidson Sportster has done more to introduce new riders to the Harley experience than any other model. Large, well-crafted V-Twin motorcycles are anything but cheap and the smaller Sportsters's relatively low cost served to lower the barrier to entry without giving up any of the intrinsic benefits that go with owning a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Currently, the Sportster features either a 883 cc or 1200 cc engine rubber mounted to the motorcycle's frame and are equipped with a 5-speed transmission. Models built up until 1991 had a 4-speed and those built up until 2004 had the engine mounted directly to the frame. These two advances are just a few of the countless refinements and improvements that Harley-Davidson has made to the Sportster lineup in its more than 50 years of continuous production.

Though not often featured in the custom motorcycle magazines, the sheer number of Sportsters on the road today means that it is the most customized Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the road today. If you are holding off on purchasing one of these bikes because you wonder if there are a lot of custom options available...don't. Nearly limitless options are available to the custom Sportster builder and such worries are pretty much ungrounded.

The Sportster has a claim to fame in Evel Knievel, the world's most well-known daredevil. Knievel rode his customized red-white, and blue XR-750 to international fame while attempting many record-breaking jumps...some of which ended in catastrophic NASCAR-style wrecks for Knievel.

With its continued popularity it's obvious that the Harley-David Sportster is a real winner and it is unlikely that it is going to be replaced anytime soon. Improvements will continue to be made, the bike will continue to evolve, and on hot summer days the Sportster will continue to be a common sight on both the back roads of America and around the world.

The 2009 Sportster 1200 Low has all the power of the other members of the 1200 line made it to a mean, stripped down persona. While it lacks the oversized front wheel, custom handlebars, and front mounted foot pegs this Harley-Davidson motorcycle still has a mean kick. The 1200cc engine turns out 79 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 RPM. It’s mated to the standard six speed transmission, is that with electronic sequential port fuel injection (ESPFI). It boasts better than average fuel economy without sacrificing power or performance. The ability to produce so much torque from such a small package comes at the expense of stability and thus, to prevent the bike from shaking like a leaf while in motion, Harley-Davidson engineers mounted the mill to the frame with rubber dampeners which absorb the vibration. The 1200 Low is closely related to its 1200 Custom cousin. It has a slightly [...]

The 2009 Sportster 883 Custom continues to enjoy the warm reception showered on it by new and experienced Harley-Davidson riders alike. While it shares much in common with the other members of the Sportster family, it has a unique set of features that sets it apart. The Custom version of the Sportster 883 differs from its cousin, the ’09 Sportster 883 Low, in a number of ways, most of which revolve around how the chassis is configured. While the Low version of the motorcycle takes a short, compact stance, the Sportster 883 Custom is more stretched out. It’s almost as if it is hinting that it comes from a long line of custom choppers ridden by renegade bikers from the days of yore. Still present is the 883cc engine. While it is the smaller of the two Sportster power plants, it has all the torque that it needs to stay [...]

Originally conceived by Harley-Davidson designers as bike tailored to the European market back in 2008, the new XR1200 received a lot of positive mention in various motorcycles publications and caused a hue and cry among US Sportster owners who wanted one for themselves. Never know to let their customers down, the powers-that-be chose to release the XR1200 in North America in 2009. This bike has a racing blood running through its veins from its silver powder-coated engine, to its narrow frame, to its mid-mounted footpegs. Much of this racer’s personality is drawn from the old XR-750, one the most successful dirt track racing bikes of all time, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boost adrenalin levels on streets, roads and highways around the world. A lot of thought and planning has been put into bringing the XR1200 from the idea stage to a full production model. Pressure to make [...]

The Iron XL883 version of Harley-Davidson’s Sportster incorporates more blacked out elements than another bike in their entire lineup. Even more than the Nightster. One thing is for sure, if Batman walked into a Harley dealership, this is the bike he’s most likely ride out on. This non-nonsense bike is stripped of all the frills leaving only the what’s needed to provide a one-of-a-kind ride. Providing exceptionally responsive handling, smooth clutch effort and durable carbon reinforced drive belt, the Iron XL883 shows how close-to-the-edge Harley-Davidson engineers are willing to go with minimalist styling when they set their minds to it. And if you think that this bike is all about looks, think again. The Iron XL883 isn’t lacking in the performance department at all when compared to the other Sportsters in the 2009 lineup. Harley designers properly matched the 883cc fuel-injected engine along with a tuned 6-speed transmission to the [...]

Many consider the Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom to be the best motorcycle that money can buy. The powerful motor doesn’t let even avid motorcycle enthusiasts down and the custom styling will have you feeling right at home at the next rally even though you may not have spent $10k -$20k on upgrades. This motorcycle may come with the name “Custom” but you do not see an overwhelming amount of flashy adornment. The larger motor does sit front and center and easily catches the eye but the head-turning elements of the bike pretty much end there. Jump on the bike, however, and you will immediately find that this one lean machine that delivers far more of a riding experience than one would expect. The bike shares the 1200cc air-cooled Evolution V-Twin engine with the both the 1200 Low and the Nightster and, as installed on the 1200 Custom, puts out 79 [...]

If you love aggressive, minimalist design, then take a second look at Harley-Davidson’s 2009 Nightster. This dark iteration of the Sportster family carries the more powerful 1200cc Evolutions Engine which means that you get a lot of bike in a small, less-expensive, package. Ready to wheel its way through the alleyways and backstreets, the Nightster takes the Sportster legend in a dark direction with dead-on, rat-rod styling. Black finishes cover wheel rims and hubs, forks and handlebar, hand and foot controls. The air-cooled 73.4 cubic-inch engine incorporates Electronic Fuel Injection and cranks out 79 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 rpm. While the performance is higher than the 883 line, at 57 highway/42 city, the difference in fuel efficiency is almost not noticeable. The 2009 Nightster is the kind of bike that can get your blood pumping on looks alone. Bar knuckle styling is what you get here and people are [...]
