2009 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom Reviews

Many consider the Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom to be the best motorcycle that money can buy. The powerful motor doesn't let even avid motorcycle enthusiasts down and the custom styling will have you feeling right at home at the next rally even though you may not have spent $10k -$20k on upgrades.

This motorcycle may come with the name “Custom” but you do not see an overwhelming amount of flashy adornment. The larger motor does sit front and center and easily catches the eye but the head-turning elements of the bike pretty much end there. Jump on the bike, however, and you will immediately find that this one lean machine that delivers far more of a riding experience than one would expect.
The bike shares the 1200cc air-cooled Evolution V-Twin engine with the both the 1200 Low and the Nightster and, as installed on the 1200 Custom, puts out 79 ft-lbs of torque at 4,000 rpm. Electronic Fuel Injection comes standard and this motorcycle and enables it to achieve and impressive 57 mpg on the highway (42 city) even though Harley-Davidson decided that a 5-speed transmission was sufficient.

The Sportster 1200 Custom derives plenty of torque from this engine but also maintains a level of handling that leaves a smile on the riders face. The 21-inch front wheel and reasonable 16-inch rear give the bike light steering and surprisingly good cornering habits, as well as straight-line stability. The stylistic elements do as well and it’s easy to see why. This Harley comes complete from the factory with chrome laced steel wheels, the one-piece two-up seat, stainless steel low-rise handlebars, and forward mounted footpegs all fuse the 1200 Custom with the spirit which sets a Harley-Davidson apart from other motorcycle brands.
There are well-established down-sides to the 1200 Custom though.

The bike is known as a great ride for kicking around town, but once the 100-mile mark is passed it becomes obvious that the motorcycle is not a long-range cruiser. There is a reason why Harley-Davidson is proud of the fact that a high percentage of their Sportster buyers will eventually upgrade to one of their “Big V-Twin” bikes at some time.

This bike is available in eight colors including Vivid Black, Dark Blue Pearl, Red Hot Sunglo, Two-Tone Flame Blue Pearl/Pewter Pearl, Two-Tone Red Hot Sunglo/Smokey Gold, Two-Tone Vivid Black/Mirage Orange Pearl, Two-Tone Black Ice/Blue Ice, Two-Tone Light Candy Root Beer/Dark Candy Root Beer, Two-Tone Big Purple Flake/Brilliant Silver. This means that there is plenty of choices for the type of rider that this particular Harley-Davidson motorcycle is marketed to.
