With no Softail Standard being reintroduced this year after production was halted in 2007 the 2009 Harley-Davidson Softail Custom is the least expensive of the eight models which round out the Softail lineup. It has a feet forward chopper profile which is a salute to the FX custom era. The tufted king/queen seat has chrome buttons and flows up an integrated aluminum one-piece backrest, providing a comfortable perch for rider and passenger.
New exterior features include a low-profile front fender which wraps around the 21-inch laced front wheel and tire. The bike also sports ape-hanger style handlebars fitted to custom risers as well as the iconic Fat Bob fuel tank secured with an embossed leather tank strap. Triple laid custom graphics accentuate the cool look of this Harley-Davidson motorcycle. A 200 mm rear tire and Bobtail fender add a bit of aggressive attitude to the rear end, while chrome details on the powertrain and oil tank set in contrast to the dark powder-coated engine. The horseshoe oil tank itself is located below the saddle, forward foot controls or foot boards, the classic Fat Bob fuel tank, and the perfect execution of custom detail in paint and metal are design elements that define each 2009 Softail model.

The 2009 Harley-Davidson Softail Custom is powered by the H-D 96 cubic-inch air-cooled, Twin Cam V-Twin engine. The power plant is fed by an electronic sequential port fuel injection system which increases efficiency without sacrificing power and produces 87.9 ft-lbs of torque at just 2750 rpm. Fuel efficiency is rated at 54 hwy/35 city.
As is the case with all Softail models, the Custom also features the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission which supplies fabulous mid-range torque when needed as well as calm engine speed when cruising. The aforementioned ESPFI system not only improves efficiency but offers crisp throttle response and effortless starting. It is designed to self-adjust as weather and other conditions change in order to maintain peak performance.
Controls include a tank-mounted electronic speedometer with integrated odometer, time-of-day clock on the odometer, dual tripometer and more. Exterior styling features such as the chrome staggered shorty exhaust, chrome "horseshoe" style oil tank, sport front fender, bobtail rear fender, and iconic "Ape Hanger" handlebars are all considered to be traditional Harley Davidson visual and performance characteristics.

As with all other members of the Harley-Davidson Softail lineup, the Custom is named for its rear-suspension design, which is designed to impersonate the lines of an old-school hard-tail frame while offering the comfort and precision of a modern suspension. This trademark hidden suspension system is stowed under the chassis which maximizes the use of space and offers ease of access for maintenance. Every Harley-Davidson Softail Custom has clean lines, a low seat height, and generally a larger build overall. The rigid powertrain allows tight packaging of the engine and frame and stimulates a solid connection between the rider and the power that moves the motorcycle. This combination is one of the reasons why the so many Sportster riders upgrade to a Softail at some point in their life.
