2009 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy Reviews

Ever since Harley-Davidson introduced it to the Softail lineup, the Fat Boy has been welcomed as a favorite heavy-weight cruiser styled motorcycle. It has served as the iconic iteration of a Softail is supposed to be, has been in continuous production since its debut in 1990, and has been a consistently strong performer for America’s #1 motorcycle company.

For 2009 the factory continued the trend of quality/style/power in the current rendition of the Fat Boy. Featuring a rigid-mount Twin Cam 96 cubic-inch motor that produces 89 ft-lbs of torque, this wide stance bike is a favorite for those looking to start a custom project. While the two exhaust pipes attached to the right side of the bike are often the first thing to get changed out when the custom cutting begins, the sound of the big V-Twin doesn’t fall short of expectations even from the factory.

The chrome over/under shotgun exhaust is a marked Fat Boy exterior styling feature and the detail work doesn’t end there. Harley-Davidson imparted additional design elements which are distinct to the Fat Boy which including: a rolled back custom front fender, full coverage rear fender, stainless steel wide cruiser handlebars, and a two-piece two-up removable seat. Everything on this bike is “chubby” including the 5-gallon Fat Bob tank on which the instruments are mounted, the thick tires and the beefy powder coated engine.

It’s easy to see how the horseshoe oil tank, low and spacious seat as well as the Shotgun exhaust all work together to bring the Fat Boy’s overall style together in flawless fashion but the single most distinctive trait of the Fat Boy has always been the cross-drilled aluminum disc wheels. Styled after the B-29 bomber of World War II fame, these wheels look like nothing else coming off the production line at any other manufacturer. Harley-Davidson enthusiasts have been debating the significance of the bike’s name considering the fact that the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were named Fat Man and Little Boy respectively, but company spokesmen have neither confirmed nor denied this over the last 19 years. The wheels come standard in matte aluminum but can be upgraded with a mirror polished chrome finish for a fee.
