2009 Harley-Davidson Cross Bones Reviews

One of the more unique Harley-Davidson production models from the 2009 lineup is the Softail Cross Bones. Dark styling with a nod towards the V-Twin classics of the past, this bike would most certainly be the one chosen by the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow.

H-D designers set out with the task to create a bike that was retro at heart but was able to handle the more realistic ride quality demands that modern riders expect new bikes to possess as they roll off the line. The result was a bike inspired by the post-war period two generations ago which saw Harley-Davidson owners modifying their two-wheelers into light and aggressive motorcycles. One of the easiest methods to achieve this goal was for to strip down everything that wasn’t absolutely necessary with the end result being that some rather unique and potentially dangerous custom bikes ended up rolling down public thoroughfares. This type of bike was what the design team eventually set out to recreate.

It’s true that the Cross Bones shares the engine, frame, and hidden suspension with all other members of the Softail lineup, but other than that, this bike stands out as the black sheep of the family. The Dark Custom styling is what really sets this motorcycle apart from others in the pack. The most notable feature would be the blacked-out springer front end followed closely by the adjustable spring saddle and the Cat's Eye instrument cluster. Other prominent features include chrome shotgun slash-cut exhaust, chopped front fender, bobtail rear fender, black bucket headlamp, and half-moon floorboards.

The 96 cubic-inch Twin Cam motor is rigid mounted to the Softail frame. It churns out 87.90 ft-lbs of torque at 2,750 rpm but maintains a full 54 mpg on the highway because of the now-standard Electronic Fuel Injection and six-speed Cruise Drive transmission.

If you are looking for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that transforms each ride through the hills into a true timeless experience, then the Softail Cross Bones is the weapon of choice. It cuts the profile of an authentic custom bobber, a stripped-down-and-chopped custom with raw finishes. It leads with the Gloss Black Springer front end and follows with other post-war styling cues, including a Gloss-Black round air cleaner cover, sprung solo seat, half-moon rider footboards and chopped front fender. The adjustable two-position pan-style saddle rides at a height of 26.6 inches. The rider rolls arm-high gripping Gloss Black mini ape hanger handlebars.
