During the 1930s and 40s there were not a lot of places for bikers to go if they wanted to tune up their Harley-Davidson motorcycles. There were no shops stocked with parts, no extensive catalogues, no web sites full of chrome and aluminum parts. Those who wanted to customize in those days had to turn to resort to a hacksaw and a welding torch if they wanted to cut down their bikes to make them faster. Among the first items to go were the heavyweight steel fenders. They were either removed entirely or had several inches chopped off – a practice that coined one of the motorcycling’s most distinctive and, occasionally, notorious movements. Harley-Davidson riders dubbed these bikes “Choppers” and the bikes were all about function. Time would show, however, that the evolution of the chopper would abandon the early focus on function in a preference for form. These bikes [...]

When you take a look at the 2009 Rocker C you notice that at first glance is almost indistinguishable from the standard Rocker. Truth be told, there really isn't a significant level of difference between the two bikes. Both have sport front fender, staggered Shorty exhaust system, and innovative rear fender attached to the rear swing arm the gives a tire hugging bobber appearance. They share their low profile chrome console, and the stainless steel pullback handlebars as well. The major differences between the two Harley-Davidson Softail models is that the Rocker C incorporates a hidden seat which allows for a second passenger to tag along. Simply lift off the solo seat and the passenger pillion folds out over the Rockertail rear section for surprisingly comfortable two-up riding. More styling differences to the Rocker C include that the finned aluminum oil tank, frame and swing arm are color-matched to the [...]

The 2009 Sportster 1200 Low has all the power of the other members of the 1200 line made it to a mean, stripped down persona. While it lacks the oversized front wheel, custom handlebars, and front mounted foot pegs this Harley-Davidson motorcycle still has a mean kick. The 1200cc engine turns out 79 ft-lbs of torque at 4000 RPM. It's mated to the standard six speed transmission, is that with electronic sequential port fuel injection (ESPFI). It boasts better than average fuel economy without sacrificing power or performance. The ability to produce so much torque from such a small package comes at the expense of stability and thus, to prevent the bike from shaking like a leaf while in motion, Harley-Davidson engineers mounted the mill to the frame with rubber dampeners which absorb the vibration. The 1200 Low is closely related to its 1200 Custom cousin. It has a slightly [...]

If there is one Harley-Davidson motorcycle that would personify the classic styling, large displacement, and the true spirit of the American heavy cruiser, it would be the Road King Classic. The bike shares much in common with others in the touring line and with the Road King in particular. Of particular note are the full size, classic fenders, the full-length floorboards for both riders, oversized, 6-gallon gas tank, and classic two-up seat. For 2009 the Road King Classic retains its 16-inch front and rear laced steel wheels and wide-whitewall tires. Tooled leather covers the seat trim and the leather-covered saddlebags. Touring features auxiliary passing lights and, unlike other members of the touring lineup, standard cruise control. Two-tone fender graphics are new for this year as is a new license plate bracket which fixes the tag directly over the tail lamp. The Road King Classic is one of the largest motorcycles [...]

Considered by many to be the original "Cowboy Bike" the Heritage Softail Classic is a heavy cruiser that has plenty of performance combo'd with classic style and an aggressive attitude. H-D definitely got the recipe right with the Heritage Softail Classic ever since the late 1980s when the bike was introduced so all the upgrades spread during two decades and the 2009 refinements do nothing else but keeping it up to date in what concerns details. We believe that owners would have taken care of that anyways as no Harley is kept in stock condition for long. This Harley-Davidson is known for being big boned which adds to the comfort factor enabling it to keep up with the Touring models on long-distance trips. It's more versatile though in that it's possible to shed both the saddle bags and windshield in order to convert the bike into a weekend cruiser devoid [...]

The 2009 Sportster 883 Custom continues to enjoy the warm reception showered on it by new and experienced Harley-Davidson riders alike. While it shares much in common with the other members of the Sportster family, it has a unique set of features that sets it apart. The Custom version of the Sportster 883 differs from its cousin, the '09 Sportster 883 Low, in a number of ways, most of which revolve around how the chassis is configured. While the Low version of the motorcycle takes a short, compact stance, the Sportster 883 Custom is more stretched out. It’s almost as if it is hinting that it comes from a long line of custom choppers ridden by renegade bikers from the days of yore. Still present is the 883cc engine. While it is the smaller of the two Sportster power plants, it has all the torque that it needs to stay [...]

The Electra Glide Standard is still one of the most popular Harley-Davidson touring models sold today. Created with the full intention of properly balancing comfort, style, and touring performance, these three characteristics are flawlessly integrated into the 2009 model. As with the other members of the Electra Glide family, this model gets a redesigned frame that is designed to increase strength, reduce vibration, and enhance overall ride quality. It is stronger and can safely handle an increase of 70 lbs in load capacity. Designers coupled the all-new frame with a new swingarm, wheels and tires, and engine mounting system, which allows the chassis to create a foundation for an all-new long-haul touring experience. The key styling elements of these motorcycles, however, are essentially unchanged so that the distinctive character and mechanical beauty of each Touring model is preserved. The 96 cubic-inch engine features a new isolated drive system and is [...]

One of the more unique Harley-Davidson production models from the 2009 lineup is the Softail Cross Bones. Dark styling with a nod towards the V-Twin classics of the past, this bike would most certainly be the one chosen by the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. H-D designers set out with the task to create a bike that was retro at heart but was able to handle the more realistic ride quality demands that modern riders expect new bikes to possess as they roll off the line. The result was a bike inspired by the post-war period two generations ago which saw Harley-Davidson owners modifying their two-wheelers into light and aggressive motorcycles. One of the easiest methods to achieve this goal was for to strip down everything that wasn’t absolutely necessary with the end result being that some rather unique and potentially dangerous custom bikes ended up rolling down public thoroughfares. This [...]

Originally conceived by Harley-Davidson designers as bike tailored to the European market back in 2008, the new XR1200 received a lot of positive mention in various motorcycles publications and caused a hue and cry among US Sportster owners who wanted one for themselves. Never know to let their customers down, the powers-that-be chose to release the XR1200 in North America in 2009. This bike has a racing blood running through its veins from its silver powder-coated engine, to its narrow frame, to its mid-mounted footpegs. Much of this racer’s personality is drawn from the old XR-750, one the most successful dirt track racing bikes of all time, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boost adrenalin levels on streets, roads and highways around the world. A lot of thought and planning has been put into bringing the XR1200 from the idea stage to a full production model. Pressure to make [...]

At the top end of the Dyna line comes the 2009 Super Glide Custom. Harley-Davidson engineers created this bike with the intentions of packing it with most of the features and style of the more expensive Softail bikes, but without adding to the overall price tag. It shares a lot in common with the standard Super Glide but the final product is distinctive in its own right. The Dyna Super Glide Custom is powered by the air-cooled, Twin Cam 96 engine and six speed transmission. Like all other models on the 2009 lineup, this bike comes equipped with electronic fuel injection to increase performance and efficiency. The engine is powder coated and features chromed cylinder heads, the seat is a solo unit and the shorty exhaust pipes not only manage to stand out, but enhance the refined look of the bike. Turning heads while cruising the boulevard and riding economical [...]
